The Research Centre for Viticulture and Enology (CREA-VE) in Conegliano (Veneto) is working out the production of rosé wine from Pinot Grigio in a study commissioned by the Consorzio DOC delle Venezie and the regional government. The team, led by Dr Diego Tomasi, is investigating and comparing the ampelographic characteristics of 17 Pinot Grigio clones from growing regions in Italy, France, Germany and Serbia. These include the shape and compactness of the grape, the thickness of the skin, the amount of polyphenols and anthocyanins as well as their resistance to botrytis. The experts want to determine the most suitable Pinot Grigio clones for the production of Rosé over two vintages and at the same time define the colour identity. In future, it will be used on the label under the designations Rosé, Rosato or Ramato.
According to Tomasi, a second test facility has also been set up to compare 13 rootstock vines on which Pinot Grigio has been grafted. In this way, the researchers want to find out the best variants for climatic changes, different cultivation techniques, soil properties and the qualitative expectations.
