According to a survey by the International Union of Oenologists in Paris, more than a third of professional tasters have problems doing their job after a Covid 19 infection. They often suffer from complete loss of taste, which can last for several months. Students have therefore dropped out of their training after contracting the virus, the association reports.

The leaders have therefore written to French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Jean Castex to ask that wine tasters be put at the front of the queue for vaccinations. The oenologists want to underline the professional risk of infection for winemakers, sommeliers and wine tasters, for whom finely tuned sensory skills are a vital tool. Many wine professionals have to completely retrain their senses after an infection.
