The international wine research alliance 'BAG' (Bordeaux, Adelaide, and Geisenheim) has a new member. With the accession of the University of California, Davis (UCD) from the USA, six of the world's leading research institutions in the wine industry are now part of the network. Geisenheim University is also part of the network. The goal of the alliance is to consolidate international research and support the global wine economy even more effectively.

During the joint scientific exchange from June 24 to 26, 2026, at the Geisenheim University campus, 34 scientists presented their work on viticulture, oenology, wine economics, and wine tourism. Among those from the USA was Prof. Ben Montpetit, the director of the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UCD.

In addition to scientific exchange, strategies were the focus to further expand collaboration with the wine industry and to transfer research results into practice more quickly. The partners aim to develop joint solutions for global challenges in the wine sector. These include topics such as climate change, environment, water efficiency, and the role of wine in society.

The BAG alliance was founded in 2010 as a strategic partnership. Since a Memorandum of Understanding in 2013, it has operated as a virtual international research institute. Founding members include the University of Bordeaux, the National Institute for Agricultural Research, Food and Environment (INRAE), and the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences (ISVV) in France, Adelaide University and the Australian Wine Research Institute in Australia, as well as Geisenheim University in Germany.
