The massive night frost in the middle of May damaged about 60 percent of the vineyards in Franconia. The State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG) in Veitshöchheim is currently expecting a loss in yield of about 30 percent, Georg Bätz, head of the Institute for Viticulture and Oenology told the gastro-information portal tageskarte.io. However, the damage is regionally varying.

The winegrowers have been hit particularly hard this year because of the heavy rainfall in the days before the frost. Ice formation had caused particularly severe damage to the shoots. If a long dry period now follows, the damage could increase significantly.
