In Spain, the grape harvest began at the beginning of August in Montilla and Aguilar de la Frontera (Córdoba province) as well as on the Canary Islands, in the Penedés and Costers del Segre. Just as in Italy and France, the vines here are suffering from the great heat and persistent drought. The country's cooperatives and agricultural associations estimate the harvest at around 42 million hectolitres - but it depends very much on whether the vines have to continue to thirst or whether there is significant rainfall. The labour shortage is an even greater concern for Spanish wineries. The winemakers expect about 15,000 harvest workers to go to France in the coming weeks. Wages there are around eleven euros per hour, three euros higher than in Spain.
