The Mainz-born author, columnist and journalist Harald Martenstein is the first honorary wine ambassador for Great Wine Capital (GWC) Mainz and Rheinhessen. The position is limited to two years. The Berlin-based author currently publishes radio columns on Radio Eins and NDR, as well as writing for Die Zeit and Der Tagesspiegel. Martenstein has been awarded many prestigious prizes, such as the Egon-Erwin-Kisch-Preis in 2004 and the Theodor-Wolff-Preis in 2012.

"Wine has a lot to do with culture in our region, so Harald Martenstein is the ideal ambassador for us," said Elke Höllein, Managing Director of GWC Mainz- Rheinhessen, explaining the selection at his presentation in Mainz. The author, born in 1953, will carry the message of the wine capital Mainz with the wine region Rheinhessen into the world for two years. He will be present at selected wine events in Mainz and will also represent the GWC Mainz-Rheinhessen internationally.

Following the appointment, Martenstein recorded a video message. The filming took place in the Gutenberg Museum at the printing press. Here the connection became clear: Johannes Gutenberg had taken the wine press as a model for the revolutionary invention of letterpress printing with movable type.
