The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) estimates global wine production in 2021 at only 247.1 to 253.5 million hectolitres. The figures are based on data from 28 wine-producing countries. They are only slightly higher than those from the historically low production year of 2017. According to the OIV, the three largest producing countries Italy, Spain and France in particular will have to record significant drops in production. Italy expects 44.5 million hectolitres (- 9% compared to 2020). Spain is expected to produce 35 million hectolitres (-14%) and France 34.2 million hectolitres, down 27 per cent year-on-year. The only major EU wine-producing countries to record higher harvest volumes than in 2020 are Germany (+4%), Portugal (+1%), Romania (+37%) and Hungary (+6%).

In the USA, the preliminary estimate for wine production in 2021 is 24.1 million hectolitres (+6% compared to 2020). In the southern hemisphere, on the other hand, a strong increase could be recorded in 2021 in all the important producer countries there. Chile, for example, is the largest producer country in the southern hemisphere in 2021 with a wine production of 13.4 million hectolitres (+ 30% compared to 2020). Argentina (+ 16%) and Brazil (+60%) could also increase noticeably.

In South Africa, wine production in 2021 is estimated at 10.6 million hectolitres, an increase of two percent compared to 2020. Australia, on the other hand, is looking forward to 14.2 million hectolitres in 2021, which is 30 per cent more wine than in the previous year.
