The global demand for sparkling wines is growing. According to the market research company Maximize Market Research, the market volume is expected to rise from around 50 billion US dollars last year to about 70 billion US dollars by 2032 (around 60 billion euros). This would correspond to an average annual growth of 4.8 percent.
Champagne, Crémant, and high-quality Italian sparkling wines with classic bottle fermentation particularly benefit. Prosecco also remains a central growth driver because it serves various price segments and is widely distributed internationally. According to the study, the main drivers of this development are changing drinking habits and the fact that consumers are opting for higher-quality wines. They are increasingly drinking sparkling wines not only on festive occasions but also as an aperitif, in gastronomy, and in private everyday life. At the same time, interest in sustainable production and clear communication of origin is growing.
Europe remains the center of global sparkling wine production. According to Maximize Market Research, Italy is the largest producer worldwide with a share of 27 percent. France follows with 22 percent, Germany with 14 percent, and Spain with eleven percent. Together with the USA, these countries account for about 80 percent of global production. Recently, around 2.5 billion bottles of sparkling wine were produced worldwide. This corresponds to an increase of almost 56 percent over 20 years.
On the demand side, the USA is considered the most important import market by value. The UK, along with the USA, is among the largest importers by volume. At the same time, Asian markets such as Japan, South Korea, China, and India are gaining importance. Reasons for this include rising incomes, growing premium consumption, and the expansion of digital distribution channels.
