Last year, Germany imported 4.8 percent more wine than in 2020, namely 14.39 million hectolitres. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, their total value amounted to 2.76 billion euros - that is 11.8 per cent more. The average price per hectolitre of wine rose by 12 euros to 192 euros.

The price increase is due to the fact that 82 percent of imported still wines have a protected designation of origin. About two thirds were bottled wines, 52 percent white wine.

French wines recorded a particularly strong increase in value with a plus of 23 percent, with only 2.4 percent growth in volume. AOP wines of origin from France even increased in value by almost 44 per cent. Imports from Italy grew by 14.9 per cent to 5.16 million hectolitres, Spumante even by over 40 per cent. Wines from Spain increased by 22 percent in volume, but only 2.9 percent in value.

These three most important import countries are followed by the USA, South Africa, Austria, Portugal, Chile and New Zealand.
