Wineries in Germany have recorded a drop in turnover of 6.5 percent on average since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a study conducted by the SRH University of Applied Sciences in Heidelberg with 80 winegrowers from the Palatinate, Franconia and Bergstrasse regions. The negative effects were mainly due to the closure of the catering trade, but also to the cancellation of their own events and the cancellation of trade fairs. These losses could not be made up for by the change in consumption behaviour in private households, even though just under 90 percent of the vintners surveyed had noticed increased wine consumption in the private sector. Sales via the distribution channels online shop, retail and direct sales had increased, three quarters of the vintners reported.

"With the study, we wanted to take a scientific look at an industry that was not in the public reporting last year In Focus ", said Benedikt Römmelt, economics professor at the SRH University of Applied Sciences Heidelberg.
