The cultivation of fungus-resistant grape varieties increased by ten percent in Germany in 2025 compared to the previous year. Thus, the Piwi varieties now account for about 4,000 hectares, or four percent of the German vineyard area. This is reported by the German Wine Institute (DWI).
The largest increases were recorded for the white wine variety Souvignier Gris. Its cultivation area grew by 170 hectares to 766 hectares in 2025. Thus, Souvignier Gris is by far the most widely cultivated white Piwi variety in Germany. In second place is Cabernet Blanc with 356 hectares. Among the red Piwi varieties, there were slight increases of between six and ten hectares for Satin Noir, Cabernet Cortis, and Pinotin.
Overall, the total vineyard area in Germany decreased by one percent to around 102,000 hectares in 2025. Red grape varieties were more affected with 791 hectares than white varieties with 539 hectares.
