Wine purchases in the German food trade returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2021. This is the result of the wine market analysis that the German Wine Institute (DWI) commissioned from the market research institute NielsenIQ. The quantities of wine purchased fell by 4.7 per cent, after they had risen by 7.2 per cent in 2020. Responsible for the increase at that time was the corona-related closure of the gastronomy. Due to a 12-cent higher average price of 3.78 euros per litre, the drop in sales amounts to only 1.5 per cent.

At 3.83 euros, German wines achieved a slightly higher average price than the market as a whole and were able to maintain their market share of 45 per cent and their share of sales of 47 per cent. 17 per cent of all wines purchased came from Italy, twelve per cent from Spain and eleven per cent from France.

The trend towards white wine that has existed since 2012 continued. White wines increased by one per cent to 47 per cent, while red wine declined by the same amount to 41 per cent. Rosé wines maintained their share of twelve percent in 2021.

The most important source of wine purchases was grocery retailing, with 65 per cent, despite a decline of one per cent. Online purchases rose by two to eleven percent.

DWI managing director Monika Reule emphasises in a press release: "In 2020, the share of households that purchased German wines increased significantly. Fortunately, most of them have remained loyal to domestic wine, so that their share last year was still above the level of 2019.".
