Exports of German wines developed positively in 2017. According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), the volume and value of exported wines each increased by seven per cent compared to the previous year. According to the figures, a total of around 1.1 million hectolitres of wine worth 308 million euros were exported to 124 different countries last year.

The average price rose slightly by one cent to 2.89 euros per litre. Quality wines, which accounted for 71 per cent of wine exports, earned an average of 3.32 eruo per litre, nine cents more than in 2016.

According to the DWI, German wine exporters in Great Britain recorded the largest increase in volume of 28,000 hectolitres. According to the report, a total of 121,000 hectolitres worth 20 million euros were exported to the fourth most important export market in 2017, an increase of 27 per cent. DWI managing director Monika Reule was very pleased that "there are now signs of a turnaround in the British market, which has been difficult for a long time". Many wine retailers there had been very successful in selling wines from the German wine regions in the past months.

According to the DWI, German wines are also becoming increasingly popular in Poland. Due to the increased standard of living and an expansion of the range of German wines in Polish food and wine retailers, the exported wine volume grew by a whopping 54 per cent to 53,000 hectolitres worth twelve million euros in 2017.

German wine exporters also recorded a significant export growth of 37 per cent in value and 25 per cent in volume in China. Thanks to an average price of 4.59 euros per litre, a very high added value is generated in this growth market. With export earnings of 19 million euros, China has risen to fifth place among the most important export countries for German wines.

According to the DWI, the USA remained in first place in 2017, followed by the Netherlands and Norway. The US market was very stable last year. With 79 million euros and an average price of 4.23 euros per litre, around a quarter of German wine export revenues were achieved there. Wine exports to the Netherlands increased by two per cent to 167,000 hectolitres with constant sales. There was also a slight increase in export value of two per cent in Norway, where German wine exporters are the undisputed market leaders in white wine sales.
