The Palatinate winemaker Friedrich "Fritz" Becker ***** has died. As reported on social media, he passed away on February 25. Becker, born in 1948, is considered one of the great pioneers of the Pinot varieties and red wine in Germany. He was among the first to use barrique for wine aging. With his uncompromising quality philosophy, he set standards. In 1973, he took over the family winery and immediately left the winemaker cooperative. His first vintage featured a drawing of a fox on the label, which has remained the trademark of the winery to this day.
Especially his Pinot Noirs have been among the best in the country for decades and have also received great international recognition. The winery is located in the border region to Alsace, where most of the vineyards are situated. It has been run for several years by his son Friedrich Wilhelm Becker.
