One of the most influential personalities on the global wine scene is dead: French wine expert and hotel owner Gerard Basset, who lived in Great Britain, has died of cancer at the age of 61. Basset was the only one in the world to hold the titles Master Sommelier (MS), Master of Wine (MW), Wine MBA and OIV Master of Science in Wine Management (OIV Msc). In 2011 he was also awarded the title of world's best sommelier. He was also awarded the British Order of Merit as Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He has received many other awards, including Best Sommelier for French Wine in 1992 and Best Sommelier in Europe in 1998, and served as President of the Court of Master Sommeliers for several years, including being named Honorary President of WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust).

Basset trained in Lyon, moved to the UK and began his career as a sommelier at the Michelin-starred Chewton Glen Hotel in Hampshire.

In 1994 he co-founded the Hotel du Vin in Winchester, UK, which became a chain of six hotels. In 2004 he and his business partner sold the company. In 2007 Basset and his wife Nina opened the Hotel TerraVina near Southampton, which reopened in February 2018 as a fine B&B, delicatessen and gourmet bistro.

Gerard Basset leaves his wife Nina and a son.
