Geisenheim University is expanding its campus with two new research centers. The newly constructed Beverage Technology Center (BTC) will go into operation on May 5, 2025. The new building of the Viticulture Adaptation Center for Sustainability and Climate Change (VITA) will celebrate its topping-out ceremony on that day.
During the planning phase, the architects paid attention to sustainable materials and construction methods. Both new buildings are made of concrete, wood, and glass. They feature green flat roofs, photovoltaic systems, and rainwater cisterns. Both buildings have also been financed by budgets from the Heureka investment program of the state of Hesse.
The new BTC is located on the western part of the campus grounds. It replaces the existing center and primarily consists of a production hall for wine and other beverages. The student sparkling wine production has also moved from the winery buildings to the new BTC. Both production areas now receive plenty of natural light. Additionally, there are classrooms, internship rooms, offices, lounges, changing rooms, storage, and technical rooms.
In the VITA, the viticulture students will investigate how climate change affects the metabolism of plants as well as the water and nutrient flows in the vineyard. From the results, they will develop strategies for cultivation and plant protection. The new building will provide greenhouses, plant growth rooms, and climate chambers with large equipment, as well as laboratories, seminar rooms, offices, and technical rooms. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
