On June 25, Geisenheim University held a ceremonial event to bid farewell to its long-serving president, Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz, who has retired. Schultz led Germany's most renowned university specializing in viticulture, wine production, and horticulture for over 13 years.
Around 400 guests from politics, science, business, and society attended the event. In addition to welcoming speeches and musical contributions, the approximately three-hour program included a discussion panel with Schultz's colleagues on stage. Politicians, as well as representatives from business and academia, recalled the establishment and development of the university. They praised the expansion of research and teaching, the creation of new study programs, and the strengthening of international collaborations under President Schultz. Furthermore, during his tenure, the new beverage technology center and the research center for sustainable and climate-adapted viticulture were established (wein.plus reported). This expansion of the campus will enable scientists to address important future topics in agriculture and the food industry.
During the ceremony, Hesse's Minister of Science, Timon Gremmels, handed over the official seal to the new president, Prof. Dr. Karl H. Mühling, who took office on June 1. "Under Prof. Schultz's leadership, Geisenheim University has developed into an internationally renowned institution that connects research, education, and practice," said Gremmels. Mühling emphasized that the Geisenheim combination of basic research and applied research with the right to confer doctoral degrees is unique in Germany. This, too, is a merit of Schultz.
