France's Assistant Minister for Foreign Trade, Franck Riester, has raised new hopes for the abolition of US punitive tariffs on wine and spirits from Europe during a visit to the Charente region. Riester said: "The situation for a successful conclusion of the dispute is more favourable than it was a few months ago" The EU has "used its influence to get the American administration to return to the negotiating table". He and President Emmanuel Macron had also made it a personal goal to de-escalate the situation.

The US government has imposed punitive tariffs on wine and spirits from Europe in 2019. The background is the conflict over subsidies for aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus.
