French Prime Minister Jean Castex has announced state aid of more than one billion euros for winegrowers and farmers damaged by the severe frost. A "solidarity fund" for affected farms is to be created for payment. In addition, winegrowers and farmers will receive a deferral or exemption from social security contributions, and the property tax on undeveloped land will also be reduced.

In addition, an emergency budget will be made available to the prefects of the affected regions "within ten to fifteen days" in order to be able to immediately support the farms most in difficulty.

According to first estimates, several hundred thousand hectares of vineyards and agricultural land have been damaged by the severe night frosts in France. At least one third of French wine production will be "lost" due to the frost, which means "about two billion euros less turnover" for the sector, estimates Jérôme Despey, General Secretary of the FNSEA (Fédération nationale des syndicats d'exploitants agricoles), an umbrella organisation of 20,000 local agricultural unions and 22 regional federations.
