The wine production in France has changed significantly in the past five years. This is shown by new figures from the French Institute FranceAgriMer, which were published at the beginning of December. Overall, there is a clear trend: France is producing less and less red wine. Its production has decreased by 26 percent since 2019, while white wines have decreased by eleven and rosé wines by seven percent.
When looking at the grape variety spectrum, white varieties are increasing, while red ones are losing significant area. Particularly affected in the past five years are Cabernet Sauvignon with now 20 percent less cultivation area than in 2019 and Merlot with a decline of 18 percent. This also reflects the ongoing crisis in Bordeaux.
Sales problems primarily affect AOP wines: Their cultivation area has decreased by ten percent since 2017, and their production has even dropped by 20 percent since 2019. Last year, AOP wines accounted for only 55 percent of the total French production.
In 2024, wine was still grown on 766,674 hectares, but the trend is clear: France will continue to lose vineyard area. Just last November, the French Ministry of Agriculture announced that it would support new clearings with 130 million euros. According to FranceAgriMer, an additional 34,400 hectares of vineyards are currently eligible for clearing.
