The number of winery insolvencies in France increased by 55 percent in 2024. The rise in the wine industry is three times higher than in the entire French economy. This data comes from a report by the analysis company Altares Dun & Bradstreet. In 2024, there were 211 insolvencies among French wineries, compared to 136 cases in 2023. 62 of these cases occurred in the last three months of the year alone, representing an increase of 59 percent compared to the same period in 2023. Although the number of affected companies is small relative to the total of 59,000 wine-growing businesses in France (according to the last survey by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2020), the trend is clearly upward. Already in 2020, the ministry noted a decline in businesses of 16 percent compared to 2010.
The area of Gironde, where the Bordeaux appellation is located, is particularly affected, with 103 cases (+84% compared to 2023). In Languedoc-Roussillon, there were 39 insolvencies (+144%), in the Rhône Valley 13 (+8%). In Burgundy, the number of cases doubled from two to four.
In two out of three insolvency cases in France, a complete liquidation of the company occurs. However, the prospects for restructuring in the wine industry are better than in the overall economy. Of the 211 cases, 47 led to company liquidations. The number of restructurings rose from 80 to 134 (+65%), and the number of rescues increased from twelve to 30 (+150%).
