The number of winegrowing enterprises in France has declined sharply since the year 2000. According to a study by the statistics department of the French Ministry of Agriculture, the number of winegrowing enterprises fell from 88,707 to 52,330 by 2020, a decline of 41 percent. The Pays de la Loire region lost the most, the Grand Est region, i.e. Alsace, Lorraine and Champagne, the least. In 2019, around 130,000 winegrowers were active, which corresponds to one third of those employed in agriculture. This number is 15 per cent lower than in 2000. 50,000 of these were non-salaried workers, farm managers and co-managers, but the number of salaried workers, including seasonal workers, increased by around 1.1 per cent per year.
The study also gives the average salary of permanent employees. The highest average income is achieved by winegrowers in the Grand Est region with 16.53 euros gross per hour, the lowest in the Pays de la Loire with 13.39 euros per hour.
