France has the world's largest organically cultivated vineyard area. This was announced by SudVinBio, organiser of the organic wine fair Millésime Bio in Montpellier, at a press conference for the fair. It should be specified that in France, 90,298 hectares are already certified organic and another 69,570 hectares are in conversion. If one adds up the figures, France is in first place worldwide with 159,868 hectares. Spain and Italy, with more than 100,000 hectares of certified vineyards each, are currently ahead of France, but the conversion rate there is significantly lower.
"The dynamic conversion rate in France has doubled the organically cultivated vineyard area within five years. Viticulture is one of the model pupils of French agriculture, because while other agricultural products are on average only 10 percent organically managed, in viticulture it is already 20 percent," said Nicolas Richarme, chairman of SudVinBio.
