Deutsche Bahn, in cooperation with the German Wine Institute (DWI), has selected the new wine range for its on-board restaurants. From over 100 wines, four wines were identified in two blind tasting rounds and will be available from 1 June. In the ICE and IC, passengers will now be able to taste the Rhine-Hessian Riesling by young winemaker David Spies and the Pinot Gris by Stefan Winter from Dittelsheim. The DB wine list will also feature the Cabernet Sauvignon from Heinrich Gies (Vier Jahreszeiten Winzer e.G.) from the Palatinate and a rosé from young winemaker Sebastian Erbeldinger from Bechtheim.
"The range of German wines on the wine list in the on-board restaurants and on-board bistros of the railway is a good opportunity to present Germany as a modern wine country. In addition, it is a good opportunity for the wine lovers among the passengers to get to know selected wines of regional origin," says DWI managing director Monika Reule about the cooperation with Deutsche Bahn.
In 2022, wine sales in the on-board catering of ICE and Intercity trains amounted to around 140,000 litres of wine. With 65,000 litres, Pinot Gris was the most popular wine, followed by Riesling with 36,000 litres and red wine with 35,000 litres.
