A survey by the market research institute IFOP shows that French people attach a "unique" status to wine and cultivate a special relationship with it. This is independent of the respective eating habits. Seven out of ten of those surveyed said that wine is "an important part of their lives". According to the survey, the best occasion to consume wine was a high-quality meal for about 70 percent, an aperitif for about 56 percent and a festive occasion for about 52 percent. The study divided the respondents into seven profiles according to their eating habits, such as traditionalists, gourmets and vegetarians.

Overall, price is also an important criterion in the choice of wine. In all consumer profiles, however, it is decisive that the wine goes well with the food - especially for traditionalists and gourmets. 38 percent of the 5,107 respondents count themselves among the traditionalists. They have a preference for simple dishes in the family circle and form the largest group of respondents.

According to the study, the production of the wine is also important for many French people, i.e. whether it was grown organically or does not contain sulphur additives. Design and label play a subordinate role in France, according to the study.
