The German retail trade with food, beverages and wine achieved 2.4 per cent less turnover in real terms in July 2021 than in June 2021, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects. This also includes supermarkets, beverage stores and discounters. It was thus 2.5 per cent below the level before the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020. In the corresponding comparison, the specialist retail trade in Germany with fruit and vegetables, meat, bakery products, wine and beverages turned over 3.2 per cent less than in June as well as 2.7 per cent less than in February 2020. These declines are surprisingly high for retail experts.

The internet and mail-order trade also recorded a steep decline across all sectors: the turnover of online shops across all sectors was 11.9 percent lower than in the previous month, adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects.
