Several wineries in Anjou-Saumur on the Loire protected their vines from the devastating frost damage in April with a winter cover. The trials were monitored by the INAO (National Institute of Origin and Quality) and show clear results. Under the fleece, the temperature was up to 4 °C higher than in the uncovered control rows.
"There are technical developments, like the fleece trials here in Anjou, or other materials in other regions. The Institute has to come to a decision," says Jean-Baptiste Moulènes of the INAO. One of the questions raised concerns the way the vine reacts under the fleece. In addition, the problem of spreading the covers still needs to be solved. "It took us 50 hours with several people for 0.4 hectares - every gust of wind makes it difficult," says Emmanuel Ogereau, one of the winegrowers involved.
