The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) has announced the first four new Masters of Wine (MW) for 2026. Karen Hong Liu (Hong Kong), Cristina Mercuri (Italy), Kim Oshiro (USA), and Bryce Wiatrak (USA) have passed their exams. Additionally, they each produced a research paper on a wine-related topic from the natural sciences, arts, humanities, or social sciences. Among them were Cristina Mercuri's work on "Wine, Women, and Fascism" and Bryce Wiatrak's exploration of the role of wine in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi.

Cristina Mercuri MW (Image) is the first female Master of Wine from Italy. The former lawyer in international firms transitioned to the wine industry in 2015. She is, among other roles, the Brand Ambassador for a German wine distribution company, where she represents the Italian portfolio of the business. She is also the Ambassador of the VDP in Italy.

With the four newly appointed, there are currently 422 active Masters of Wine from 30 countries.
