In the Spanish DO Penedès, the first five wineries and their wines have been certified according to the new "Vi de Mas" classification system. "Vi de Mas" means "wine from the farm" in Catalan. The mas is an old large house that is the centre of a historic farm, a masia. This corresponds to the term "domaine" in France. In order to be allowed to call its wines "Vi de Mas", the winery and its vineyards must have existed before the phylloxera disaster, i.e. before the end of the 19th century. In addition, there is the category "Gran Vi de Mas" for wines that have enjoyed international recognition for at least a decade. The "Gran Vi de Mas" are comparable to the concept of "Grand Vin" in Bordeaux. The system combines elements of Burgundy, where the origin is classified, and Bordeaux, where the work of the winery is central.

The wines can be made from all the grape varieties permitted in the DO Penedès. However, the vines for Vi de Mas must be at least ten years old, those for Gran Vi de Mas at least 25 years old. A minimum ripening period of eight months for white wines and 20 months for red wines is prescribed. The harvest yields must be 15 percent below the limits for the DO-Penedès.

The first classified wineries are Viladellops, Mas Rodó, Sumarroca, Alsina&Sardà and Huguet de Can Feixes.
