French wine production will recover in 2021 after a historically small year marked by frost and rain. For this year, the Ministry of Agriculture expects an increase of between 13 and 21 per cent, or 42.6 and 45.6 million hectolitres. However, soil drought and further heat waves could limit the increase if they last until harvest.
Overall, weather conditions in most parts of France were favourable compared to the previous year, despite locally severe hailstorms and extreme temperatures in June and July. Exceptions are the Charentes due to severe storms, Alsace, Languedoc-Roussillon and Burgundy due to drought. In Bordeaux, production is expected to be below the five-year average due to frost and hail damage, but above it in Champagne. To help the winegrowers affected by hail and drought, the French Ministry of Agriculture has announced some aid projects.
