The Edmund Mach Foundation Research Centre in San Michele all'Adige in Trentino will host the first tasting and evaluation of wines made from Piwi varieties in Italy on 18 November. The aim of the event is to improve and promote knowledge of Piwi (fungus resistant) varieties through the sensory comparison of wines made with at least 95 per cent of grapes from these varieties. Piwi grape varieties are crosses between European vines and fungus-resistant American vines. They are more robust against fungal attack and vine diseases, need significantly less pesticide and are also often more frost-resistant. The varieties approved in Italy include Johanniter, Muscaris, Solaris, Souvignier Gris and Cabertin.
