In the Palatinate, Rheinhessen, Saxony, Franconia and on the Moselle, the first grapes for the Federweisser production will be harvested this week. This was announced by the German Wine Institute (DWI). The grapes harvested are mainly early-ripening varieties such as Solaris or Ortega. The DWI also expects an early start for the main wine harvest. Müller-Thurgau grapes are expected to be ripe at the end of August to the beginning of September, as is the Pinot varieties for sparkling wine production. Late-ripening varieties such as Riesling will be harvested from mid-September, depending on the growing region.

The dry and hot summer is particularly hard on younger vineyards. In many regions they have to be irrigated. Grapes are also cut off to relieve the vines. Older vines would survive the summer comparatively well despite the low rainfall due to their deep roots. So far, according to the DWI, things are looking positive in the vineyards. The grapes are healthy, but the berries are small due to the persistent heat. This year's harvest quantities depend heavily on whether - and how much - it will rain in the coming weeks before the harvest.
