A few days ago, the Federal Statistical Office published the 2017 harvest estimate. According to the figures already collected at the end of October, the grape harvest last year was very small: According to these figures, just under 7.6 million hectolitres (hl) of must entered the cellars, 16.5 per cent less than in 2016, the second smallest harvest since 2000 after 2010.

The figures vary considerably between the individual growing regions. Württemberg had to accept the greatest loss in volume. Here, the harvest of 847,000 hl was 26 percent lower than in the previous year. In Rheinhessen, the minus to 2016 was 25.7 percent, the winegrowers on the Mosel harvested 23.6 percent less. The Palatinate harvested 2.02 million hl, just under nine percent less.

Among the winners of the vintage is the Ahr: here, almost seven percent more was harvested in 2017 than in 2016. The forecast also points to a plus in Franconia and the Middle Rhine: according to the figures, the Franconian harvest will increase by 1.8 percent compared to 2016, and by 1.4 percent in the Middle Rhine.

However, these figures are based on statistically calculated values based on the figures queried in October. The Federal Statistical Office will not publish the final figures for the German harvest until April.
