Exports of sparkling wines from the European Union to the rest of the world fell by six percent in 2020. This was the first time exports fell by an average of eight per cent a year after a decade of growth. This was due to the global covid pandemic, which saw restaurants and bars closed for long periods.
Champagne was hit hardest by the decline - and thus the reason for reporting losses - with a drop of no less than 20 per cent to 66 million litres. On the other hand, Prosecco was able to almost maintain its exports with 205 million litres, Cava with 58 million litres even increased by ten percent. Overall, EU exports fell from the peak of 528 million litres in 2019 to 494 million litres in 2020, which is still twice as much as in 2010. In return, EU countries imported 9.3 million litres of sparkling wine from non-member states, which corresponds to two per cent of the exported volume.
