In its current agricultural report(EU Agricultural Outlook 2021-2031), the EU Commission has published forecasts for the wine industry in the EU. According to the report, per capita consumption of wine in the EU will fall to 22 litres per year by 2031, 0.4 litres less than in 2020. This is 0.4 litres less than in 2020. Total wine consumption is expected to reach 123 million hectolitres by 2031. EU wine exports are forecast to increase to 32.2 million hectolitres per year by 2031 (+ 0.5% per year). This is due to the high demand for EU wines with geographical indication (GI) and sparkling wines in general. In addition, there is still a demand for entry-level wines. European producers could also further expand this market.

Until 2031, the total vineyard area in the EU is expected to remain stable, with the share of quality wines, especially organic wines, increasing. The potential decline in yields could be partly compensated by the use of new varieties better adapted to climate change. As a result, wine production in the EU is expected to decline to 149 million hectolitres (- 0.2% per year) by 2031.
