A Chinese trader from Shanghai who offered fake Bordeaux wines at the Chengdu wine fair has been sentenced to 18 months suspended sentence and a fine by a Shanghai court. This first conviction is "an important milestone" in the decades-long fight against counterfeiting, the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) commented on the ruling. The CIVB had alerted the police in March 2019 because they suspected the dealer. The investigators confiscated the exhibited wines from various Bordeaux wine-growing regions and later, during a search, seized over 10,000 bottles of fake wine.

"Bordeaux is the first collective trademark in the world to win a victory in China with a criminal prosecution," according to a statement by the CIVB.
