The German Wine Institute (DWI) presented the first 16 graduates of the new "German Wine Professional" course with their certificates. The 21-month, in-service training course, which the DWI has organized in cooperation with the regional regional wine advertisements, comprises 13 modules with 30 training days in all German wine-growing regions.

The course ended with a two-day written examination and a final oral examination before two expert juries. During the course, the theoretical knowledge of grape varieties, growing regions, oenology, wine market and wine law as well as sensory knowledge had to be demonstrated and an assigned topic had to be adeptly and expertly presented to the jury.

During the training, the participants were trained by renowned lecturers in all 13 German growing regions. Particular attention was paid to the practical teaching of the various special topics on site. The participants were able to discuss them with the wine producers and experts during the numerous visits to companies, visits to typical regional vineyard sites and comparative tastings. A further focus was the training of sensory perception and the expansion of wine knowledge.

Currently, DWI 2020 is preparing the second training course to become a "German Wine Professional". The course is already fully booked with 20 participants from Germany and abroad, including a master sommelier and buyer from the USA, a Norwegian journalist and wine merchant, as well as a specialist dealer and representative of the Sommelier Association Salzburg. The training is carried out in cooperation with the regional wine advertisements and winegrowers' associations of the winegrowing regions, the Weinbauinstitut Freiburg, the Julius-Kühn-Institut Siebeldingen, the Hochschule Geisenheim University, the DLR Rheinpfalz, the DLR Mosel, the LVWO Weinsberg and the LWG Veitshöchheim.
