The organic wine producers' association Ecovin has presented its harvest report 2020. According to its own information, the harvest volumes of Ecovin farms are on average below the long-term average. In Saxony and parts of Franconia, the harvests were particularly small. The reasons are the third dry summer in succession, late frost in May and isolated hail damage shortly before the harvest. However, the quality is very good due to the good grape ripeness.

The organic wine year 2020 began in spring with early budding and hot summer temperatures in April. In addition to the icy days in May, there was late frost damage in some growing areas, which caused massive yield losses in some places. Temperatures were also cool during the vine blossoming period. Flowering was very slow, so that the berries developed differently within a grape. During the summer, the weather was characterised by a lot of sunshine until September. "The winter humidity was not sufficient to maintain the water reserves in the soil throughout the summer. Particularly affected vineyards and young fields had to be irrigated," reports Anne Meyer, expert at Ecovin.

"On the one hand, the high temperatures are good for grape ripening. On the other hand, there was sunburn damage and the spread of powdery mildew was encouraged. The winegrowers had to be on their toes," adds Andreas Hattemer, Chairman of Ecovin. Especially the organic winegrowers in Würrtemberg had problems: The cultivation area was particularly affected by the strong late frosts. In some vineyards, all shoots froze, so that no grapes could be harvested. In the course of the growing season, hail also fell - and the cherry vinegar fly was also found. This caused massive losses for the organic winegrowers.
