The Board of Directors of the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe and Roero has approved a three-year ban on the expansion of vineyards for the production of Barolo DOCG. According to the decision, the production area may not continue to grow between 2020 and 2013.

Since 2011, the planting of vines has been subject to a quota. The reasons given by those responsible are the precautionary protection of the origin of the wine and the landscape. On the other hand, exports of Barolo have been declining significantly for some years now, but at the same time the areas under vine have been significantly expanded.
