US President Donald Trump has sharply attacked the French wine industry with a tweet. He wrote: "France makes excellent wines, but so does the USA. The problem is that France makes it very difficult for the USA to sell its wines and imposes high tariffs. The USA, on the other hand, makes it very easy for French wines and imposes very low tariffs. That must change!

At present, EU tariffs on US wine range from 11 to 29 US cents per bottle, while the US currently levies five US cents on French wine. In 2017, US wines worth 82.6 million dollars were exported from the United States to France, while bottles worth 1.9 billion dollars were exported from France to the US.
