Domestic sales and turnover of German wines increased by around eight percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, according to the German Wine Institute. Foreign wines, on the other hand, grew by only two percent in sales volume and five percent in turnover. This is the result of the market analysis conducted by the "Nielsen Homescan Panel", which analyses wine purchases by private households on behalf of the DWI. It was also striking that more people were buying German wines than in the third quarter of 2019.

The increases are therefore mainly due to very strong demand in July, while wine purchases were significantly lower in August and September. "This is probably due to the fact that, on the one hand, households had built up a certain stock of wine and, on the other, the situation in the restaurant trade eased somewhat from August onwards, with the result that wine consumption shifted back there more strongly," explains Monika Reule, Managing Director of DWI. Viewed across all wine origins, the figures show that the overall wine market in Germany grew by five percent in sales volume and seven percent in turnover in the third quarter.
