The Austria-based Domaines Kilger of the Munich auditor and tax consultant Hans Kilger are in bankruptcy proceedings. The trigger for this was a creditor application. Kilger has been investing in Southern Styria and Southern Burgenland since 2015. The company includes, among others, the Kilger winery, the Gamlitz Castle, as well as several restaurants and hotels like "Am Ratschen" on the Eisenberg. Several bankruptcies in Kilger's environment have already made headlines in recent years. Among them were Steirerwein and the Domäne Müller 2022 as well as the Schiefer & Domaines Kilger 2024. According to several newspaper reports, Hans Kilger announced that he would consider a restructuring. The goal is to continue operations and reach agreements with creditors.

Already in April 2025, the holding company of Domaines Kilger announced in a press release that it also apparently has financial problems. A bond due in April 2024 in the amount of 20 million euros cannot be repaid but must be restructured. The term was extended by three years according to news from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and the accrued interest is to be paid only on the due date. The holding company Domaines Kilger GmbH & Co. KGaA holds a significant stake in Domaines Kilger GmbH & Co.

This is the second report about an Austrian winery in financial difficulties this week. The industry magazine Vinaria reports that the Domäne Lilienberg, one of the two largest wineries in the state of Carinthia, is threatened with forced auction. A bank wants to collect debts of 3.8 million euros in this way.
