The association of the Spanish DO Penedès appellation has adopted a comprehensive sustainability roadmap for the coming years. With the new rules, the wineries of the Catalan wine-growing region commit themselves to cultivate all vineyards organically by 2025. This step is in line with the DO Cava, which recently decided to produce all grapes for the wines of the top category Cava de Guarda Superior from organically certified vineyards by 2025. This is an ambitious schedule - but the president of the DO Penedès, Joan Huguet, is optimistic. Currently, about 60 percent of the vineyards are already certified and "the support from the producers is very great", says Huguet. In addition, the producers are striving for DOQ status, the top of the Spanish wine classification. So far, this is reserved for the two appellations DOC Rioja and DOQ Priorat.
