A digitally networked closure for wine and spirits bottles with NFC (Near Field Communication) is designed to indicate whether bottles have been opened or tampered with. The Italian manufacturer Guala Closures presented the networked NěSTGATE cork with an NFC chip at the VS Pack trade fair in Cognac. This shows on an app on the mobile phone whether the bottle is still originally closed. Guala Closures has already been marketing these solutions, which particularly enable the traceability and authentication of bottles as protection against counterfeiting, for high-priced spirits since 2018. The company is currently working on integrating the NFC chips, which respond to movement, into screw caps and capsule foils of bottles sealed with corks. The chips also offer the possibility to provide consumers with further information about the wine, such as origin and food pairings.
