On 22 October 2019, the German Wine Academy (DWA) submitted an application to the Secretariat for World Heritage in Rhineland-Palatinate at the Ministry of Science, Training and Culture for the inclusion of wine culture in Germany in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

According to a press release by the German Wine Institute, the aim of the application is "to raise public awareness of wine culture and to honour the achievements of all those people who actively shape, cultivate and develop it in Germany".

In May 2019, the DWA launched an online petition with the German Wine Institute (DWI) and called on the sponsors of wine culture in Germany to support the application. As a result, more than 4,100 supporters could be won over. In addition, according to the DWI, all umbrella organisations of wine producers, winegrowers' cooperatives and wineries, all regional winegrowers' associations and other organisations of wine culture have also signed the petition.

By mid-April 2020, each federal state will make a pre-selection from all applications and submit up to four proposals to the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK). There, a list of proposals comprising a maximum of 64 applications from all states will be drawn up and forwarded to the Committee of Experts on Intangible Cultural Heritage at the German Commission for UNESCO. The committee of experts examines and evaluates the applications on the basis of professional criteria and then makes proposals for the inclusion of cultural forms in the nationwide Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
