German consumers bought significantly more wine in the second quarter than in the same period last year. According to the German Wine Institute (DWI) based on the Nielsen Homescan Panel, wine sales rose by 12.5 percent from April to June 2020. German wines benefited particularly strongly from this development with an increase of around 14 percent. White wines increased by ten percent, red wines by 15 percent and rosé wines by as much as 29 percent. As DWI Managing Director Monika Reule explains, an average of four percent more households had bought wine than in the same quarter last year due to the closed gastronomy during the lockdown. In addition, the volume of purchases per household increased by seven percent. "The fact that consumers have increasingly turned to German wines is also due to the clear trend towards buying regional products as a result of the circumstances of the Corona pandemic," said Reule. In relation to the first half of 2020, the share of German wines in the total volume of wine purchased rose by three percent to 44 percent compared to the previous year. Italian suppliers were able to increase their market share by two per cent to 16 per cent, followed by France with eleven per cent (up 2 per cent) and Spain with ten per cent (up 7.5 per cent).
