Around 100 French winemakers blocked a highway to Spain in protest against low wine prices and intercepted a tanker truck. According to Arnaud Poitrine, the Secretary-General of the union "Coordination Rurale", the loaded Spanish white wine was intended for a winery at the Côte d’Or that exclusively produces Crémant de Bourgogne. The winemakers emptied the cargo onto the roadway.
This wine reportedly costs 30 cents per liter, according to Poitrine. Union members are fighting for a 20 percent price increase for their wines, which would mean about 20 cents per bottle. However, marketers and large retailers have even demanded a further price reduction of seven percent in recent negotiations. This is unacceptable. As long as they do not receive "fair prices", the winemakers will continue the protests and block freight traffic at borders and distribution centers in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The action on Tuesday caused a 40-kilometer traffic jam on both sides of the border.
