A pilot study shows that cryotherapy can help against the loss of the sense of smell triggered by Covid-19. This was carried out by the University Hospital of Reims in collaboration with the company Cryotera. The researchers put together three groups of 15 people each who had Covid-19 and suffered from anosmia, or loss of smell, for between one month and one year. The first group underwent one therapy per day for two consecutive days, during which they went into a cold chamber at -100°C for a few minutes. The second group did this for five consecutive days. The third group did not receive any cold treatment.
Fifteen days after their treatment, 28 of the 30 treated people had at least partially recovered their sense of smell. No improvement was seen in the 15 control patients. The detailed results of the study have just been published in The Journal of integrative and Complementary Medicine.
