The German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has approved the use of drones for the application of plant protection products on steep slopes. Only preparations that are also approved for application by helicopter may be used. For this purpose, the drones must be able to automatically follow the route specified by the user, the maximum height of two metres above the vines and the maximum speed of 13km/h. The permitted spraying equipment and injector nozzles are specified in a list published by the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI), the Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants. Approval from the competent authorities of the federal states is required for drone use. The regulations of aviation law are to be complied with.
