The Consorzio Vini Collio has included the "Orange Wine" category in the appellation's production rules. in the future mash-fermented white wines may be marketed as Collio DOC. At least seven days of skin contact are required for these wines. The recognition of this wine category was long overdue for many producers in the appellation, as mash-fermented white wines already have a long tradition here. Renowned producers such as orange wine pioneer Josko Gravner are based here. Mash-fermented white wines make up around five per cent of the Collio's total production.
At the most recent meeting of the consortium, 72 per cent of the winegrowers present voted in favour of changing the specifications. For winegrower Sasa Radikon from Oslavia, the decision is "an important milestone". The aim now is to increase quality, create clear rules and bring order to the category. It is an important first step based on years of work by the consortium, explained Radikon. A newly established working group will define the exact criteria, including colour classification and volatile acidity. The aim is to ensure a standardised assessment and greater transparency for consumers.
"The vote reflects our shared commitment to combining tradition and innovation," emphasised David Buzzinelli, President of Consorzio Vini Collio. Inclusion in the specifications not only ensures quality, but also strengthens the importance of the companies that produce these wines.
In addition to the Orange Wines, the consortium will include another white wine in the specifications, made exclusively from the grape varieties Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia Istriana. This was the original composition of the Collio Bianco, which was softened in 1991 in favour of other, non-indigenous white grape varieties. The new cuvée is intended to further sharpen the Collio's territorial identity and bring the region back to its roots.
There will also be an annual event dedicated to the Collio for the first time. The premiere will take place on 25 and 26 October 2025.
